I believe that our natural resources, even in city limits, need to be protected for future generations. It's research based that an urban tree canopy promotes wellness physically and emotionally. Also, trees help hold on to rainwater to help our watersheds. A tree canopy cools in the summer and blocks harsh winds in the winter. Also, natural areas provide vital habitat for beneficial insects. That's why an inventory must be done before the resources are disrupted. Action without knowledge is ignorance we can no longer afford. We must preserve our natural resources for ALL ethnic groups to promote equity.
This is why I support the following:
1. I SUPPORT TREE AND NATURAL LAND INVENTORY
Spokane has a tree canopy goal of 30% and strong support for natural land protection without adequate codes. An inventory of trees, natural areas, wildlife habitat is necessary to inform the critical areas code. The Growth Management Act requires protection of critical areas, forests, habitat and natural lands.
2. I Support an enforceable critical areas ordinance is required to protect critical areas, trees, habitat, water quality, etc. There are unprotected natural lands throughout the City.
3. I heartily Oppose the blanket Environmental Review exemption in order to protect critical areas such as wetlands, forests, wildlife habitat and riparian areas in neighborhoods. All neighborhoods will be exempted from environmental review in two phases. Neglect by our city leadership is not honoring their fiduciary responsibility. We haven't just inherited the earth from our ancestors, we are borrowing from our children. What kind of world do we want for future generations?
