I'm writing to object to increasing the zoning density in the west end of West Central. I am sure other neighbors have written to note the unique character of our neighborhood - and indeed it is unique. It is a fragile balance of demographic diversity that includes people from all walks of life and many, many families that have lived there for generations. Homes are still affordable, the neighborhood is welcoming and walkable. We know each other in West Central. That's due in large part to the single-family home character of our little neighborhood.
Allowing high density will mean multi-story buildings and the loss of that unique character. But it also will impact us with traffic and flow issues. There are few ways in and out of the west end of West Central, and almost all of them involve waiting at Maple or Ash to get out. Increased density will make the wait at these traffic lights longer, more frustrating and ugly for the residents on Broadway, Boone and Maxwell. It will impact emergency services as well. Neighbors don't want this zone change, for lots of reasons. Spokane should not increase its growth at the expense of its oldest and most diverse neighborhoods (East Central, West Central). Please keep the density levels in West Central as is.
